Balls To The Wall

Artist: Iggy and The Stooges
Song: Search and Destroy
Album: Raw Power
Mood: Reckless

I have something of an irresponsible streak. I’ve gotten drunk and ridden mopeds around town with strangers (to be clear, I was riding on the back of a moped with a stranger driving. Don’t drink and drive, kids.) I’ve also drunkenly passed out on the front lawn of a nursing home in a bathrobe. I even once almost set my whole apartment on fire because I thought setting dish towels ablaze would be a fun activity. Again, I was drunk. (See a pattern?) Granted, I’ve never done something truly reprehensible like trying heroin or throwing rocks at people waiting for a bus, but I have had my moments. For some reason, when I think back on these memories, one song always pops into my head: “Search and Destroy” by Iggy and The Stooges.

I think it’s because the memories are always somewhat hazy, with only the scars and smoldering remains of dish towels to serve as reminders of the truth. And when you think of a song like “Search and Destroy,” it just sounds like the song that would be playing as these strange events unfolded. The Stooges had a knack for creating music that somehow both centered you and knocked you off balance; the arrangements were always top-notch, but the songs were played with such force and violence that you almost have to steel yourself for a moment before playing a Stooges song. That, coupled with Iggy Pop’s vacillations between perfectly-sung lyrics and frantic yelps, make it the kind of song you want playing when you decide to do something stupid. (Like, for example, cutting yourself with a broken bottle on stage.) So the next time you want to step outside of yourself for a minute and do something truly asinine, make sure “Search and Destroy” is playing first. It’ll make the event that much better (that is, if you can remember it later).
