The Grunge Revival

Artist: Nirvana
Song: About A Girl
Album: Bleach
Mood: Unmotivated

To be honest, I missed the whole Nirvana craze when I was growing up. “Nevermind” came out when I was 6, and I didn’t actually listen to it until I was 13 or so. Even then, I only really liked “Come As You Are” (because the bass line was simple and I learned how to play it in an afternoon) and, of course, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” At one point, I owned the album, but never really gave it a listen; eventually, I just gave it away. (Feel free to shout at me in the comments.) Recently, though, I read an article about Nirvana commemorating the 10-year anniversary of their debut album (or something, I don’t know), and a few days later I found “Nevermind” in a pile of CDs at work. Thinking it to be serendipitous, I gave it another chance and was summarily blown away. Of course, I’m not expecting a parade for picking up on a band that achieved national acclaim almost a decade ago, but…AREN’T YOU PROUD OF ME?!

Anyway, this Nirvana spree led me to the song of the day: “About A Girl.” It’s the perfect lazy day song, designed for rain and staying indoors. Cobain’s vocals sound almost strangled, like he’s trying to do too much, but in its own peculiar way, it works. I’m sure it’d be idiotic to say “If you haven’t heard it, check it out,” because I’m sure you have, but listen to it again. It’s a reminder of what good, emotionally gripping rock ‘n roll used to be.
