After just about every concert I attend, I get what I like to call the “concert withdrawal shakes.” For months after snagging tickets the excitement just builds and builds until the day of the show arrives. At this point it’s too much to contain. The concert is explosive; it’s such a release. But the show whips by in a flash and before you know it, the band has reached the conclusion of the encore and there is no more. That’s when the withdrawal kicks in.
Right now I feel like a junkie still coming off my high and craving my next fix. This past Saturday I had the pleasure of seeing the Dutch symphonic metal band Within Temptation at Terminal 5. The band rarely tours in the U.S., so when they come around, you damn well better get tickets. I bought mine in February. It was my second time seeing them and just like I remembered, they blew me away. Their stage presence is nothing short of memorizing. Leader singer Sharon den Adel vocals soar over pounding drums, heavy guitar riffs, and sweeping orchestral arrangements. To call them epic is practically an understatement. (Especially since the band blew a microphone during a song.)
Their music is so full of energy, it’s hard to sit still. But it’s beautifully balanced by quiet interludes where Sharon lets her voice calm the waves of intensity. But the song I chose to share is a little different. It’s off their latest album, The Unforgiving, which tones down the grandeur and aims more for the hard rock hits. The song “Faster” is well, fast paced and fun. As I type this, I’m resisting all urges to rock the F out.
Until we meet again Within Temptation, I will settle for YouTube videos to get my fix. Thanks for kicking my (and all of New York’s) asses on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd. I knew I wasn’t the only one not who appreciated rock music that didn’t fall in the indie category.
