Artist: Linkin Park
Song: Breaking the Habit
Album: Meteora
Mood: Frustrated to change
Change is always welcome but sometimes it’s necessary. You can either sit around complaining that it’s not raining sunshine dust on you or go do something about it. To quote the oh-so wise Randall from Clerks, “Either shit or get off the pot.” You can’t have it both ways and I’m slowly making changes in my life; baby steps.
One reason I’ve always enjoyed Linkin Park is because I feel like I could have written these lyrics –and I don’t mean that in a demeaning way. Lead singer Chester Bennington has a habit for always tapping into problems we all face. They don’t shroud their lyrics in metaphors and I never feel like I have to decipher what the song is about. Bennington wears his heart on his sleeve and it’s comforting to know I can hear a song and immediately relate.
In “Breaking the Habit,” Bennington is confused, frustrated, angry. His habit seems to be the instigator of arguments, but whatever the habit, it needs to be smashed in the face. “I don’t know how I got this way/I know it’s not alright/So I’m breaking the habit/I’m breaking the habit tonight.” The subdued music coupled with the angst of the lyrics create a perfect balance, demonstrating both the frustration and realization of new beginnings. Here’s to punching bad habits in the face.
