Who Can Argue?

Artist: Two Door Cinema Club
Song: This Is The Life
Album: Tourist History
Mood: Content

At the time of this writing, my apartment is completely without power. A Hurricane Irene rolled through and did some damage, and now there are enough candles lit in my place for a goddamn Barry White video. The way my building is set up is basically a giant “L” shape, sort of like a hotel, and I’m on the 7th floor. (That’s as much info as I’ll give, so you potential stalkers can call it quits now.) It’s weird to be looking out over a completely dark courtyard with nary a light in sight, but it’s also extremely peaceful. I can hear some people having a blackout party across the courtyard, and all that’s missing is the right song. Fortunately, I’ve found the perfect one: Two Door Cinema Club’s “This Is The Life.”

The song is somewhat pop- computer-generated beat, harmonic vocals; however, just because it sounds pop doesn’t mean it’s not great, and the lyrics are perfect for an evening like this. The chorus (“And if this is the life…then who’d argue?”) speaks to a feeling of contentment and happiness, a feeling that is further enhanced by the melody behind the lyrics. There’s something comforting about taking stock of your surroundings and realizing that, for a brief, beautiful moment, there’s nothing you’d change about your life.

There are very few opportunities for us to have a few hours of totally silent reflection, but those moments are to be appreciated. With a song like this, it’s a hell of a lot easier to do so. I think so, the people having the party think so, and if you give this song a listen, I’m sure you’ll think so too.
