I’m Only Happy When It Rains a Hurricane

Artist: Garbage
Song: Only Happy When It Rains
Album: Garbage
Mood: Happy or miserable? You decide.

With Hurricane Irene rearing her ugly head, ready to cause serious mayhem and destruction this weekend for New York, I thought it only fitting to write a post about Garbage’s “Only Happy When It Rains.” The song is well over a decade old yet it never tires, never gets old. It’s quite possibly the quintessential Garbage song despite it not necessarily being their best.

Lead singer Shirley Manson knows how to slather on the sarcasm thick in this 90s alternative song. “You know I love it when the news is bad/Why it feels so good to feel so sad/I’m only happy when it rains.” Actually it begs the question, is she just being sarcastic about her misery or is it a case of it being easier to be depressed? I know I’ve certainly had those moments where I really do “enjoy” my misery in a manner of speaking. It’s so much less effort to be miserable than it is to be happy. I cry and I pout and in a way it feels good, especially when you can bring others down with you. Hmm…maybe I shouldn’t be taking pleasure in that…

Shirley would love for you to pour your misery down on her, to join her in a good sulk. Oddly enough, the song makes me feel anything but gloomy. Maybe it’s because Garbage is one of my favorite bands or maybe it’s because staring at this red head is just heavenly all on its own. Either way, I’m not miserable. But maybe this song makes you feel morose. I don’t think either mood is wrong. Embrace the depression. Embrace the rain. And then dry off.
