The new single from Evanescence, “What You Want,” was literally released yesterday and I’m smitten. But I’m also extremely biased because they are one of my favorite bands. The first few times I listened to the track though, I wasn’t really listening to the lyrics. I was just über excited to hear new music from a band that’s been on a four year hiatus. Somewhere around the 6th listen, I really started to hear the song and began to understand what it was really all about. Before the single dropped, Amy Lee explained this song is about her falling back in love with Evanescence, because frankly, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to return to it.
For the rest of us, it’s trying to discover what we truly love in life and going after it. “Do what you what you want/Your world’s closing in on you now (it isn’t over)/Stand and face the unknown (got to remember who you really are).” Even at the age of 25 I feel my life is rushing passed me. You can’t be scared to go after what you love and life is just too damn short to not make every day epic. The song is Amy’s struggle to fight for what she loves. The chorus is from the point of view of her insecure self, that part of her that tries to take the easy way out, “Hello, hello, remember me? I’m everything you can’t control.” If this were 20 year-old Amy, she might have let her insecurities win this battle. But the more mature 29 year-old self is all about happiness and strength these days. “There’s still time, close your eyes/Only love will guide you home/Tear down the walls and free your soul.”
When you need that push to go after your dreams, let this be your song. It’s fast paced and despite its hard rock sound, it’s fun and motivating.
