Upbeat Thump

Artist: Matt & Kim
Song: Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare
Album: Grand
Mood: Cheerful

I don’t have a backstory to this song or anything remotely cool or unique to relate. You know that scene in “The 40 Year-Old Virgin” where Paul Rudd brings Steve Carell his big box o’ porn, and inside it is “Everybody Loves Raymond”? Paul Rudd’s response when questioned about it (“That’s…that’s actually just a good show.”) is exactly how I feel about Matt & Kim’s “Good Ol’ Fashion Nightmare”- it’s just a good song. There’s certainly nothing groundbreaking about the track, with the possible exception of the distinctly hip-hop drum pattern that has, as Soulja Boy would put it, “Speakers goin’ hamma” (seriously, the bass on this song is remarkable for an indie-rock track). But other than that, there’s really nothing revolutionary about the song- it’s catchy, lighthearted, and fun. But maybe that’s precisely what we need from a summer track (as I’ve said so many times before).

Matt’s singing is simple, but it fits the motif of the track perfectly- nothing extravagant (a Muse song, this ain’t), but perfectly suited to the strengths of the song. To be honest, I’ve been listening to this song on repeat, and I still can’t say with any degree of certainty what, if anything, this “Kim” character contributes to the track. Then again, she could be the driving force behind that beat, in which case she’s beyond reproach in my eyes. Either way, they make one hell of a duo, and they may yet create some game-changing music together. For now, though, tracks like this will do just fine.
