Artist: Eric Clapton
Song: Hard Times
Album: Journeyman
Mood: Gloomy
Blues musicians, amidst all their humble yet massive therapeutic rambling, tend to talk about having to pay their dues, and about the implications of such metaphorical reference – especially when you think that you are having it really rough. Life for these musically-inclined growling men has being nothing but pushing and grinding up a hill their entire life and therefore, there is no way they could know about anything else besides good ol’ roughing it up. Precisely so, “Hard Times” talks about just that. And Clapton, who knows a thing or two about having it rough (poor guy saw most of his friends die during his life), decides to wail off so that you get a little bit of his blues too, in a clear demonstration of flooding talent that is, of course.
The lyrics will have you thinking about it all over and over again because, if you ever complained about the woes of everyday life, then you can definitely relate to this tune. The notion explored in this song is universally true, for sometimes it is good to let it all out in the form of some unchained shrilling explosion. Whether you’ve been mistreated by your boss, your parents, your significant other, your dog/cat, your coach, a coworker, your baby brother, your neighbor’s parrot, you will feel some empathy for the flowing aches circulating through the core of this marvelous song. The message left at the end is simple and round: Be grateful for what you have, and enjoy the ride! I believe most of us have little to complain about anyway. Until the next one!
